Things to be getting on with whilst oral exams are happening

You need to remain IN SILENCE whilst exams are being carried out.

If you talk, you will lose marks as this is a SPEAKING and LISTENING exam.

What can I do whilst exams are being carried out?

1. Prepare for your exam with quizlet lists and the list of useful phrases.

2. Prepare for writing exams by revising tenses. Find the link below:

Oral exam in pairs - Structure

Part 1 - Short Introduction to Examiner (2-3 minutes)

You could be asked any question about you and your life so be prepared.

Part 2 - Discussion based on a situation with a picture to help you (2-3 minutes)

eg

Refer to this checklist:

Discuss all options?
Both speak equally? Why? Why not?
Give reasons for their opinions?
Have they both done the following:
Made a suggestion
Asked the other’s opinion
Shown a preference
Agree/disagreed
Kept the discussion going
Summed up (made a final comment)
Use the lovely phrases further down on the blog too :)

Part 3 - Describing a photo (3 minutes in total but each student talks about their photo for one minute each)

Remember to:

1. Start with a general description.

2. Use prepositions to describe different parts / people / objects in the photo.

3. Use interesting adjectives and ways to describe specific content in the photo.

4. Give your opinion of what is going on in the photo - what COULD be going on?

Part 4 - Conversation based on photo (3 minutes)

e.g. Both your photographs showed people doing things in groups. Now I’d like you to talk together about things you do in groups, and whether you like doing things in groups or not

Checklist for part 4:

1.Talk about BOTH parts of what the examiner says
2.Start with a question to your partner
3.Listen to your partner and RESPOND to what they have said.
4.Keep the conversation moving forward (talk like a normal person not an English robot!)
5.Interesting opinions and examples
6.Fancy language – a range of tenses, interesting adjectives
